Ihave an 87 Aspy that I love and ride daily, but I have short legs and the 1200 Aspy is tall and top heavy. I have heard that they lowered the overall height and center of gravity on the 1500 Aspy. While I would love to have reverse I am unsure if giving up my 87 Aspy is worth very little change in a 1500 Aspy. But if they sit lower and are not as top heavy my short legs would really love IT. I am looking for input from some of you guys who have had both bikes. I really love how much information is available from all of you on this forum!!!

Hey Dean
From 96 on the 1500 seats were reshaped lower than the earlier 1500s. Are you still on the stock seat on your 87?

1987 GL1200 specs show 30.7" seat height

1997 GL1500 specs show 30.1" seat height

You can also shave out some of your foam in the front sides of your seat or a 1500 seat to get you some less width there and give you a closer to the ground feel.

Footpegs instead of floor boards will make reaching the ground easier too.

On the 1500 you can put a shorter CT on the rear as Rudy did and gain another 5/8"-1" closer to the ground but will also lessen the clearance on the underside.

Weight is more on the 1500 than the 1200. I can say the 1500 handles very well in the corners. Compared to the 1100, it has a lot more power and as nimble once rolling. Slow speed parking lot just takes practice and once there you won't go back though I wouldn't mind having a naked wing to have for short rides.
I rode my 1500 on the Tail of the Dragon last fall as well as roads in CO for 4 days and many points between here and Bar Harbor ME for 3 1/2 months, 13,000 miles and found out I had leaned into the corners lots more by evidence of the Kury Ergo mounts being ground off where they were mounted on the lower rail of the engine guard, they are now mounted on the vertical bar and up higher.

This is where they were mounted before.
