got some info on this in another thread about radios...

it's my understanding that 80-82 is all common or interchangeable

then for 83, there's a longer seat, the trunk is bigger (read that somewhere) as well as moved aft to accommodate the longer seat

newday777 wrote: "Seats 80-82 all models are the same size, yours being an 82 it will fit, 83 was longer to give more passenger room and trunk rack is moved backwards to make up the seat extra"

for my 82, is the longer 83 seat a bolt in? or even usable with the original location of the trunk?

i'd also like to use the bigger trunk from an 83, will it work with my original mounts and rack? dunno how they went about moving the 83 trunk aft, whether with a new mount/rack for the 83 model or by just repositioning the mounting points inside the trunk

also interested in any info regarding using GL1200 stuff (bags/trunk)

at a quick glance, looks to me like the 1200 trunk is meant to stay attached, unlike the 1100 line where it comes off quick via key lock

also noticed recently that there are aftermarket trunk relocation (aft) kits out there, tia

ALL '80 to '83 trunks are the same size.

Yes, the trunk is moved back on the '83 with a different trunk / saddlebag mounting bracket. You can either replace the entire bracket from an '83 onto yuour '82, or buy or make your own trunk relocation bracket to move the trunk back a couple or more inches.

The '83 seat will bolt in, but unless you move the trunk back, it''ll be quite a tight fit. The back of the seat will be all scrunched up and can't move back at all.

'80 to '82 trunk bracket side rail:

You can see the extra length in the rail that goes towards the back, moving the trunk towards the back.

had a look at mine, if i go with the upper part, does that change the mounting points of the bags also? do they also go aft?

if they do, then my bottom or lower bolts wouldn't line up to the original lower mounting points and to make it work would require also getting the complete lower crashbar/lower bag mount assy?

actually, just had another look and don't see any prob slightly modding the lower bag mounting points if the uppers change (aft with the trunk) at all with the 83 upper rack

read about a bigger trunk at wiki, mistake?

There are some falsehoods on wiki, like the 1100 being essentially the same bike. The engine is pretty much a bored 1000 but that is about all that is the same. I never measured them but when I had an 83i and parked next to an 82 the trunk did look bigger.

To use the 83 seat you will need to get an 83 trunk rack. The rack and trunk set back further by having longer side rails on the rack thereby moving the trunk rearwards to accommodate the longer seat. Some still use the trunk relocate kit to move the trunk further back on the 83 rack(83 rack stays in position and trunk relocator moves the trunk itself further back on the rack.

The saddle bags stay were they are.

the seat bases look to be the same (identical), 82 aspy - 83 interstate, measured 'em

it looks to me like the extra lenght in the 83 comes from making the drivers seat area smaller and adding a bit (more padding/diff contouring) to the back area, vs the 82 aspy i have

i'll take side by side pix for comparison

SADDLEMEN SEAT COVER HONDA GL1100 GOLDWING 80-82 is advertised on ebay and when i inquired if it would fit an 82 - aspy, they indicated that it wasn't listed

i suspect the 82 aspy seat is contoured diff from the regular line

never know what prior owners may have done though, with what i have

this shot shows what they did at the back, 82's at the bottom

at a glance, the trunks look to be the same size

the gl1200 air shocks are ~ 1.25" longer & bolt right up

i can now confirm the above, the 82a seat is diff from the rest,

in addition to the other comments, the rear trunk rack for an 83 also sits higher than the 82

got the 83 trunk rack mounted, all the other 82 stuff bolts up

test fitted 1200 bags and trunk, a few easy mods will do the trick,

easiest/best bet and fit for the bags is using the the upper rear mount and bolting it into the stock location, that leave the front lower mounts under the bags sitting (barely ~1/4") on the gusset/plate and original location for the 1100

the 1200 trunk is very easy, practically a perfect fit
