Twice now my '82i has let me down on the roadside. Both times were very hot days here, the bike lost power and stalled. After waiting 10-15 min. it started up and ran fine. I suspect overheating so I've changed the thermostat, rad hoses, and rad cap, and ensured the fan is working.I would like to know if anyone knows how to check the temp. sensor and the fan switch to see if they are working properly. My manual says nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

If the fan is working, the switch should be fine. Probably the same goes for the temp sender, if the gauge is working normally.

Probably not overheating, if it got hot enough to quit it would have at the very least blown the head gaskets. It sounds like the classic symptom of 1200s pulse generators failing which is uncommon on 1100s but is a possibility. You need to ride it until it quits and check for ignition spark.

Does the temp gauge function normally? If yes, did it ever indicate the bike was getting hot? Does the fuel gauge work?

You didn't say where the temp guage had been at on those rides at shutdown.
Did you inspect the water pump?
How old is the gas filter? It could be plugged.
How old is the gas in the tank?
Sounds like vapor lock from heat, Open gas cap when it happens to release pressure.

The shop manual gives the check procedures for the swiches you are asking for.
Do a forum search bar on those.
Look in the workshop section of the menu.
You might find that at goldwingdocs.com in the how to section.

I just got this bike in midApril. The only days in acted up were on days in the mid 80's. I rode one evening for an hour with no problems, but it was cooler outside. Both temp and fuel gauges are not working. I also thought of vapour lock and released the fuel cap but it did not help. I am going to change the fuel filter this weekend. And I never considered an electrical problem. Thanks everyone for your suggestions, I will let you know what I find.

So I got my bike all back together with new thermostat, rad cap, and hoses. Rode around the neighborhood, then to work, and Sat. evening rode to Hamilton, (1hour each way) and the bike ran fine. Not so much as a hickup. Thanks for all your suggestions.

I have the same problem. My temp gauge works erratically, I think is malfunction of the Sender Unit. But I always think the little Sender does not get my Wing into overheating. It's that possible? Or the objective of the Sender is only to read?

I forgot: My fuel gauge doesn't work too.

Another Questions:

It could be valve clearence?

What it is the purpose of the Sender Unit?
