Mine was real easy. I took off the shifter and got a stiff piece of wire with a short bend in the end, and was able to hook the seal and pull it out with the wire. Tapped a new one in and replaced the shifter. No more leak

Hello Rich and Welcome . You will need to remove the shift lever , Then the shaft that the lever mounts on , is actually mounted to the shift shaft . So this intermediate shaft needs to be removed its a little tricky .

TO remove that shaft and get at the seal , you need to remove the lower body panel(covers the header pipe) . You will probably have to remove the lower front fairing panel ( 3 screws, one center , one each side then finess it off ). The lower body panel has 3 acorn nuts along the bottom edge, I think a bolt at the front . Sheesh its been a while since I did this so bear with me .I think another bolt at the rear of the lower panel , but you may have to start at the rear and remove the part over the muffler ,then the middle section , to get at the rear bolt of the front section . once the lowerpanel is off you can work at the intermediate shaft . Its also splined , so look at it for punch / alingment marks or make yourself a paint line to assemble it back the same spot. Some folks seem to remove the header but it has been done with them in place .

I would allow a day for this if its your first time getting into a 1500 . It is kust a lot of little things which consume time.

Here is the only link I have found in the A=Z Tech Post . :Oil leak around shift lever - Goldwing Technical Forum - Forums - Steve Saunders Goldwing Forums

A lot of reading there and not so much actual help but perhaps some tips .

I wish I had more to offer . I hope some others will be along to add to this . I hope you find the forums helpful and enjoy the time you spend with us .

Hi rich and welcome to theforum.

This its an easy and commond job for the 1500's owner. I just did one for a freind last week just dont rush your self total it took me 3 hrs in and out total. The removed partwhere cleaned polish before reinstall ...

Just like Mike said remove front cover , sidechrome, muffler guard as for myself i remove the heather to have the room to work and clean the mess on the engine.

The inner shifter (the one close to the seal is tricky to get out at times stuck between the frame and the shaft.to get it back in I grind the inner part to make it thinner and easy to install as for the seal i dill a small hole into it and screw a little sheetmetal screw to remove it. to reinstall I pry it in using a block of wood . make sure its in even all around.

Let us know how it whent Good luck..

Norm.

The only thing they forgot, if you have floor boards w/heel toe shifter that will have to come off first.

Hey hey Rich Just curious did you manage to replace the seal...

Two details I forgot.

when installing new seal put one or two row of electric tape on the shaft to protect seal during install and a light coat of grease on seal to sit the lip properly...

Have fun..

Norm.
