A friend of mine has 2000 GL1500 that starts and runs fine, gets good fuel mileage, makes not strange sounds but between 2100 and 2400 it acts like it cannot breath and when idling the exhaust from the left pipe is MUCH stronger than that from the right.

At highway speed in runs perfect. At low speed in town, perfect. Only issue is a narrow RPM range, 2100 - 2400.

Carbs have been rebuilt three times by three different mechanics.

Lots and lots of Sea form has been burned.

Carb sync.? Air screws adjusted correctly? Vacuum hose bad or connected wrong? After market (POS) trigger wheel?

Would carb sync cause a dead spot in the rpm range while the machine runs fine otherwise and gets as good a mileage as it ever has?

Vac hoses are new, petcock is new, no trigger wheel

Were the carbs adjusted synchronized after installed on the bike each of the rebuilds?
Are the floats properly adjusted?
Have all the vacuum lines been tested, checked for leaks?

As you are in Calafornia his bike has an extra emissions canister fitted andsome of the vacume hoses are different etc etc you cant have one exhaust blowing more than another because it has a collecter box fitted that spreads the pressure evenly other than the one side thats blowing less is blocked in the silincer it may be worth removing this one and seeingis it so ,his bike runs on the idle circuit up to 2500 rpm when the main jets kick in what you discribe is happening points toa sticking slide in the carbs then when enough pressure come on it releaces and then theRPMs shoot up remove the air filter and and see will both slides move with your finger easly all the way back spray the slides with carb cleanerand see if they are any free er than before and last as the carbs have been looked at by three guys all ready have any one of them checked the diaframs on the slides for a pin hole
