So, I bought a replacement speedometer sending unit for my 1985 Aspencade 1200 Gold Wing. I paid a pretty good price for it. I have taken more of the bike apart than I would have liked to get to the connector, which isnot at the gauge cluster but down under the gas tank cover. Surprise, the manual didn't say that. But, anyway now that I have the bike torn down. The male and female connectors are swapped around.



The female is on the replacement sending unit and the original sending unit had a male end. The replacement sending unit is out of a 1987 Aspencade and the description said it would fit the 1985.



So, here is my question. If I clip the wires and swap the connectors making sure that the wires match by color code, will this unit work??? I don't want to cut and splice in this unit if it's not going to be compatible with the electronics. Does anybody know for sure??

It should work if you do as you say and switch the connectors. Be sure to solder the connections or face trouble later on.

Yes. Dave is correct. I have an LTD unit on my 86 Aspy. Keep the color codes right and enjoy.

Libraries are full of stuff I don\'t know.

I have a hunch I know about how much you paid for that thing since I just bought one for my '86 SEi.

Thanks very much everyone. I will go ahead and switch out the connectors. I will solder all connections, I agree that it's the best way and I always do that.



I was taught to interlock the individual wires into eachother without twisting the to ends of the wire. It creates a better bond as there is more surface area contact between the individual wires. Also, it doesn't take as much heat to heat up the mass of wires at the end of a twist. It's hard not to twist them, but you get used to it and it works much better.

Ok, so I put the Aspencade back together today. What a job I made for myself. I took apart the bike to get at the gage package only to discover that the speedometer sending unit connects down under the gas tank cover. Anyway, I did cut the connector off of the replacement speedometer sensor from the 1987 Aspencade and soldered the male end from the original 1985 Aspencade, my bike to it. I checked the wiring diagram and made sure the color coded wires matched to the wires that I would be mating the new connection too. The speedometer works fine now.



I just wanted to confirm for everyone in case someone else ran into this situation too. So, a 1987 Aspencade speedometer sending unit has a female plug on it and a 1985 Aspencade speedometer sending unit has a male plug on it, or it such was the case this time. If you cut the male connector off and rewire to matching wires it will work just fine.
