GL1800 FI mil #25

Hi Folks,

I am brand new to your web site. Read good things about it and wanted to be a part of it. So thanks! I am experiencing my first problem with my 2003 GL 1800 with 28,000 miles. I was cruising down the highway at 65 or so for about 15 miles after a lunch break and notice the bike begins to "buck" or "hesitate". Not drastically but definitely. Then I notice the "FI" light is lit. Eventually I come to a traffic light and idle RPM fluctuates between being on the verge of stalling to about 1300 RPM. It stalls but restarts easily. I must keep the RPM's up around 1000-1500 to keep it running. I make it to my friends house and determine the code is a "MIL 25". This morning I am to make the trek home, approx. 300 miles. I come out this A.M. bike starts and is idling normally with no "FI" light. I drive for about 30 miles, everything normal. Then it comes on and begins to hesitate. May have been a dumb move but I make the drive home. Gas mileage seemed worse than average though I didn't actually keep it.

Being a guy who likes to do his own work on my bike I break out the Honda Service Manual and look up MIL 25 and I'm already in a qaundry which is this. Under the "Symptoms" column the only alternative it gives is "Engine operates normally". But obviously from my above description it isn't operating normally. So, my question are: 1) How do I proceed when, in the first step, I am given a symptom which is not true of my bike and 2) Any insights to share with me in light of this code.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help me out. It's much appreciated.

My only question is how did you determine it was code 25?
According to the diagnostic chart, it's for the right knock sensor. And as a general rule, this is only an open circuit code. It does NOT determine there is a knock, only that it has no way to monitor it. And also as a general rule, the knock sensor doesn't exhibit any driveability complaints, unless the vehicle is turbo charged, in which case it will prevent the turbo, or blower from working. At most, it might retard the timing a few degrees. But since the book says "NO drive complaints", I have to assume it's not programmed that way.
Have you checked for tech bulletins?

Libraries are full of stuff I don\'t know.

Knock sensors were a common failing on early GL1800s and often resulted in erratic idle and stalling.
