I was worried about the same thing when I saw blue smoke coming from the left side on a cold startup. I did some searchin and it turns out this is normal, particularly if you had your bike on the side stand. A little oil seeps into the cylinder. If you use the center stand it will help with this according to what I've read about it.

Very common on 1500's and nothing to worry about.

Same with mine. Sometimes worse than others and sometimes not at all. Now I don't pay it much attention.

My 93 SE was the same. It stopped when I started using the CT, and I still use the CT on my 1800. I only use the side stand for temporary stops and always use the CT for overnight on trips and in the garage.

If you have too much oil in it, it'll smoke. Check oil on center stand, remove dipstick and wipe dry, put back in but only set on threads to get proper level read. Top line in the middle of the flat area is the high mark.

The smoking on my bike seems directly related to how far I open the choke. I start it with a small amount of choke and open it up as needed to run right. I know it doesn't seem like a choke issue, but if I work the choke that way, no smoke at all.

Even a bad day riding is better than work.

It could be. It could be in that case float levels also.
The choke on the 1500 is actually called an enrichment valve and it may be putting too much gas in and need resetting per the repair manual.
