Dealer Claims Full Synthetic in Goldwing is Bad?

Hi, I hate to make a thread about oil, but I was told at my dealer by "the goldwing guy" something I thought was really strange and wanted to confirm its wrong here.

The guy said "never use full synthetic oil in the goldwing, it will ruin the clutch". This had me scratching my head and the only thing I can think of is this guy is talking about full synthetic car oil which I know would cause clutch slippage.

Is there any truth behind what he said or is he plain wrong?

I have a 2010 GL1800, I have also read conflicting info when googling for the best oil, some people say to use 10w-30 and some say 10w-40. I usually always use 10w-40 in every bike i have ever owned. I live in NJ where we get weather as high as 100F at times in the summer.

Lots of people use full synthetic with no ill effects. As long as it doesn't have "energy conserving" in the little round circle on the back of the bottle it is fine. Honda calls for 10/30 in the 1800 and I learned a long time ago that higher viscosity than recommended can cause problems.

My '02 has had only synthetic in it since new according to the prior owner, that is 98,000 miles and the clutch seems to be 'normal to me'. ( I am lucky to be in touch with the PO )

I'm sure he did not use the Energy Conserving kind though.

When I bought the bike from Honda of Russellville AR, I asked them if they knew what kind of oil it had in it. They told me they had just changed it out and it is now Honda 10-30.

Ran that for almost 3,000 miles and just last week changed it over to Shell Rotella T5 10W30 per DaveO430's recommendation.

It is your money, spend it like you want, the engine won't care, and the clutch won't either as long as we stay away from Energy Conserving.... ( the friction modifiers are what are bad for clutches )

You need to kindly reeducate your dealer! Non-energy conserving synthetic is fine for your Wing!

As usually, most dealers do not anything or very little about the Gold Wing. As said in other post, do not use any oil that says energy conserving, that will hurt the clutch. If you bought your Wing there I bet he also told you you needed a 600 mile service!!
I would like to see the expression on his face when someone tells him they use Shel Rotella fully synthetic oil since it is marketed as a DIESEL oil.

As long as the synthetic oil is rated for motorcycle use, there is no problem. As to oil weight, follow the manufacturer's specs.

Just because the dealer(s) that you have been to have techs that you think might know less that average, its un-fair to make the comment you made. I go to two dealers in my area, and the techs know these bikes very well. Maybe its that you think you know more? I will ask one of the techs I know and see if Honda school has a class: "All Honda Motorcycles, less the GoldWing".

Honda makes (has made for them) and sells oil MADE FOR THESE BIKES!!! In my 30+ years of riding Hondas, always using Honda oil, NEVER an oil related issue!!


Sure, save a few bucks with cheap-o crap oil, and cross your fingers!!

As long as it is non 'energy conserving', like stated before, and of an appropriate weight, changed appropriately, your motor and clutch should live a long and happy life. And MANY 'Wingers use MANY brands of oil and there are MANY hundreds of thousands of happy miles logged.

I have a 90 GL1500 and I use Valvoline Full Synthetic Motorcycle oil and it works just fine... As said by the prior posters,,, make sure it is "For Motorcycles" in what ever oil you use...

I always used Honda GN4 and an OEM filter on my Goldwing and will do the same for the Baby Goldwing.
I attended Wyotech and they didn't teach the students about the Goldwing, the instructors were more interested in teaching you how to work on sportbikes, at least the HD students learned 'All' HD bikes including the V-Rod. I attended the HD Tech program.
