I looked into Custom Rewind in Birmingham and, from all the reports I can find, they do outstanding work. They rewind not only stators but also starters, ignition coils and a bunch of other electrical items. Looks like they could rewind almost anything with windings in it. They can put a green coating on the windings of the stators to make them survive in the hot oil bath they live in. Here is a report I found that describes some of the work they do.

Thanks everyone for all the encouraging replies! I'm going to study the posts in this forum and on you tube to get a grip on how to do this. One question: what seals, gaskets and other bits do I need, and where do I get them?
Thanks!
Gary

Gary... to begin with you are going to need a rear cover gaskit, the (4) copper exhaust gaskits, intake mainfold gaskits, coolant, and I suggest a drive shaft boot, and output shaft seal . Most of those parts are still available from Honda except the stator and voltage regulator/rectifier. I would get the stator from Custom Rewind and the reg/rect from Ricks Motorsport make sure it is a Shindengen

To get you started . I gathered parts to do mine over the winter of 09 and did the job in the spring of 10. I threw a set of plugs in while I had it out. If you think you might forget where small things might you might want to use the bag and tag system I devised the first time I did the job .

I went to the dollar store and bought a cheap pack of sandwich bags and when you take screws or bolts from a certain section . Bag them and use a sharpie to tag them. That's what I did the first time I did the job . Now I can do it with my eyes closed LOL

I've had good experiences with them, but we'll see how this stator thing turns out.

Really? There's always room for differing opinions. They claim their stator is made by Ricks and those get mostly good reviews.

I've never dealt with them, but have read so much bad, that...
...Well, you don't have to shoot yourself in the foot to know better than to shoot yourself in the foot. Maybe your good review will help. I know they offer some otherwise unobtainable parts at very reasonable prices.

If their stator is made by Ricks you might have a good shot of getting a good one . Back when I did mine I had heard that Rick stators were actully done by Custom Rewind . Didn't know that to be a fact so I ordered mine directly fro CR. After the first one i bought was a piece of junk and lasted about 15 mins I wasn't about to take a chance

One thing for sure is SC didn't make it . But I will tell you this if it has a blue coating be cautious

As Bike and Dennis stated

Metal99, try and get your money back. You won't be able to, but try.
Then, use that stator to weigh down your trash can so it won't blow away in the wind. It will do you a lot more good in your trash can than it ever will in your bike.

New product now available from Randakk-stator for the GL1000/1100/1200. The price is $109.99. I wish I'd known that before I bought my Rick's Stator. Unfortunately, it's not intended for the fuel injected models. It's made by an Asian company, but he claims it's the best of the lot. He has tested in his own bikes. They are tested by the company before being sent out and he then tests them himself.
