Brake Recall Definitive Update

I had the brake recall performed on my 2013 bike today. I have known the technician who did the recall for awhile and, since mine was his last job of the day, we chatted about it. I am also attaching the repair order for the job. There are several stories floating around about what is, and is not, included. I read through the recall paperwork. Here's what it is:

1. The COMPLETE brake system (front/rear) is flushed with 6, 12 oz bottles of brake fluid.

2. The primary AND secondary master cylinder is replaced. He showed me the ones that he took off my bike.

3. There was no evidence of anything wrong with my existing brake system.

Brian said that the primary issues are with the Gen I wings. The problem seems to be when the system is not completely flushed every 24 months as stated in the service manual. This allows contaminants to block passages. To combat this the internal filter sizes have been increased and the internal metals changed.

IF your dealer is not flushing the entire system or replacing both master cylinders your dealer is ripping off Honda. This is a $424 repair.

Wow, 6 bottles of brake fluid - now that's a flush!

Funny that the repair order only details the secondary master being replaced (not both). Seems like the dealer is losing if they replaced both but are only invoicing 1 for warranty work.

The parts package for the recall contains the SMC and the master cylinder sub-assembly. Refer to the package contents at the following link.

I see now that "M/C set, second" is a 'kit' with multiple parts. I was thinking that M/C set meant 1 Master cylinder.

Thanks Apatz for posting this Service bulletin. I was wondering when Honda was going to do that. Last year when the word got out that there was an issue I took mine in to my local dealer and the mechanic did not have any direction from Honda at that time. Now there is direction. Thanks for the post.
