Just an upgrade on the Darkside. I went to the Darkside for my 1996 GL1500 I used a Austone Taxi Tire. But after 2 years and about 24,000 miles I have gone back to a K177 Motorcycle Tire.
Now for the reasons:
1. the Austone tire was actually almost 2 inches higher when compared to the K177.
2. The ride for me while it took some getting used to was great.
3. But the ride for Gail was much worse she felt every bump in the road. I ended up swerving a lot to miss every bump I could it changed my riding style.
4. I added Progressive shocks to the rear and Progressive said the shocks come with 2 oz's of oil and recommended I add 2 more to balance the ride. I did and it does help just not really enough.
5. I bought another rim and put a K177 tire on it and rode it to a rally this weekend it was a total of 559 miles. the ride for Gail was much better and even I noticed the bumps were felt less. I will admit that there is still 4 oz's of oil in each shock and I will probably keep it there.
6. The car tire was great metal bridges were easy to drive over and the snakes didn't bother me nearly as much. The buffeting from trucks didn't move the back of the bike nearly as much. 24,000 miles later the tire still looks new. All in all if I rode alone or could find a shorter tire I would still be riding the Darkside.
7. Just a side note 4 months ago I hit a really deep pothole and it debeaded the tire I was able to fill it back up and sort of set the bead but it was never perfect and I would lose about 20 lbs of air every 6 days. I figured I would have to take it apart and have the tire remounted but just never got around to it.
Thanks for your time reading this comments or ideas would be appreciated and if anyone knows of a shorter tire for the 1500 please let me know.

175/55R16; 175/60R16
Too bad you far away. I have 175/60R16 I'd like to swap for taxi.

The only other CT size you will find that fits easy is a 175/60/16. A 55 would be too short (my opinion, if you even locate one). Sorry the Austone didn't work out. My rider finds it more comfortable and quieter. But, different bikes, etc.

Vote one for year-round riding! Austone Darksider PVT (Passenger Vehicle Tire)
