'86 $250 Hound Dog

Drawn to the flame or should I turn away from the light? This is on its third go around on Craigslist. It started at $500, then $300 and now $250. No title (I have dealt with this before in WA State, seller has the keys, and he says it will turn over with a new starter. He seems young and not too schooled in Goldwings. He says it has been sitting for a long time. I've requested a call back. At the least it would need carb overhaul, tank cleaning, grease, fluid changes, brakes overhaul, and tires. I'm OK with that. If I do go over and look, what is the best way to check to see if the engine is locked up? It looks like it has the engine cover on it. Do they need to be removed to get to the alternator bolt? What am I missing? If it is frozen that is a deal breaker. http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/mcy/5812047222.html

It would be a steal if it has a six speed. Remove the left side cover to expose the back of the alternator/stator same as your 1100.

At that price, I would get it and see if anything could be done to get it in working shape again.
If not, you could get your money back by scrapping it out, maybe more.

At $250, it'd be fun just to scrap (as mentioned) and a 6-speed (OMG! or typo) could be a huge bonus.

I'd be a bit concerned about getting plates and title from the Vermont Department of Labor

But if you can get a good solid notarized bill of sale and the bike in your hands for $250 -- it'd be fun in my book!

Rather than turning the motor at the crank-bolt, an easy "driveway" test can be getting it up on the center-stand, pulling it into 5th gear using the rear wheel to crank things over... (if you think the engine is frozen, bring along a spark plug wrench to pull one or more plug so you can get a feel that the engine is indeed turning--- If you wanna ride the bike, it's not a bad thing to pull all four plugs and fog the cylinders with a little lubricant/penetrant so you reduce the chances of scoring or chipping a rusted ring or something...) -- The check from the tire-forward will let you feel more about the drive-line and even compression/valve-train as you're turning things over

IMHO, of course.

It is starting to look like a scam. I messaged the seller twice to get the second photo and little info. I sent him my cell number on Wednesday, no call back. Then yesterday he lowered the price to $250.

I agree, the bike is in the same town as me and it would be very easy to go look. The only reasons I can think of that he is being difficult to communicate with is he is a kid, or trying to scam it. When you buy a bike without a title the person possessing it must be trustable as the legally acquiring it. As you go through the title/registration process ownership claims can be made against it. I'm not interested in parting it out.
