While in Arkansas I heard a loud squeal that lasted about 5 seconds, almost like driving onto rumble strips on side of road. Thought maybe it was a semi even though it sounded right at bike, never felt anything. Noticed not long after that heard slight squeak and noticed speedometer fluctuations of 3 to 5 mph, happened every so often until about 30 miles from home that cruise control released, then realised that speedometer was at 0. Odometer stopped also of course, where do I start diagnostics?

When I purchased a new speedometer cable (cable and sheath) it was already lubed when made. There was no need to add additional lube.

That was 11 years and 108k miles ago. We just purchased a new speedo cable a couple years ago for a GL1500 and the same deal.............!!

I would suspect they are still lubing them at assembly.

Lube if you want but I seriously doubt it will be necessary (based on experience).

I bought a new speedometer cable, including the outer sheath, and it was fully lubed also. Didn't need anything done to it.... ready to install.
