1980 Honda GL1100 Clunking Noise

Just got this bike running recently, but this noise is concerning and I'm not sure what to make of it. Only happens when I let the clutch out. Carb sync or maybe I need to inspect the clutch plates. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

If you have not synched the carbs do that first. Sounds like primary chain rattle from here.

Or maybe the splines in the rear wheel taking up slack from wear

It doesn't seem to be in gear.

Seems too loud and erratic for the primary chains.

Clutch basket or maybe a busted damper plate.

How many miles on the motor? Thatís loud, does it go away with rpm?we donít hear from too many bad clutches,on the left rear of the motor thereís a cap that covers the bolt that hold the stator tight, look at that and assure itís tight,if the rear wheel is turning while itís running (sometimes it will while in neutral) step on the brake and see if it stops,if it quiets with rpm,the chain could be bad but most time the motor will have a lot of miles on it.
Describe how you synced the carbs, they would have to be way out for it too be that loud and it would rattle on idle.

The bad news is whatever it is the issue is deep inside. I am less sure it is the primary chain as it turns all the time. Clutch in or out. I think it is more likely an issue with a bearing or gear in the transmission. The first thing I suspect is you have a bent shift fork. Start the bike and hold the clutch in. At the same time shift the transmission through all the gears. Does the noise go away. Usually 4th and/or 5th is the issue. Maybe try putting the bike on the centerstand and rotate the rear wheel in neutral. Use quick motions back and forth as well as rotating normally in both directions. Can you hear a clunk or other noise then? This test eliminates the chain. The transmission gears only rotate when the clutch lever is out when the engine is running. . You might start by taking the clutch out but I am afraid the issue is deeper inside and the engine will need to be removed. Sad because the motor seems to run really well.
