78 GL1000 - Chasing Timing, Spark and Points

Hi,

After having done a 77, 78, 76Ltd, I perhaps became a victim of overconfidence and now I am struggling for the last couple of days and seek help.

78 GL1000, bought it a few days ago, it is a decent bike in need of good paint set (complete) as PO decided to paint it with shoebrush other than that I started working on the bike and after;

Oil change
New spark plugs
Spark plug caps (measured to between 4.9 - 5.9 ohms) good on the bike ?
Cut initial 1/4" off spark plug wires
New battery
Primary and Secondary of coils passed the test

Fired up with some hesitation (sat for over 5 years) but only with choke, as soon as choke is released, died. Took the advancer unit out, cleaned and lubed it as it was a bit sticky.

Now all of sudden spark gone from rear two plugs, when i switch the pigtail connectors at the condensers, spark shifts to rear two and no longer sparks on front two. Assumed its condenser failure, installed new unit. Spark on both front and left rear is good whereas rear right is weaker. Any thoughts?

Have struggled with gap, timing of points with no luck so far. Since bike is missing centre stand, it makes it even harder and frustrating to lay down on floor to get eye level to points.

I recall a method whereby points are disconnected from power supply and adjusted with external battery, would be nice to have a link of this process.

Any help and troubleshoot is appreciated.

You disconnected or broke a wire.

Once you get it reconnected, look to the fuel supply.

Why ain't we ridin'?

You obviously know your way around points but the method you are looking for is to set the timing by use of the battery, which won't help a weak fire situation. Swap the resistor caps from one side to the other and see if the weak spark follows, if not it's probably a bad coil. Ohm testing will tell you if it will work but not how well.

I did not cut or disconnect any wires. I just switched pigtail connectors on condensers blue to yellow and yellow to blue and spark moved from front 2 to rear 2

Hi Toronto:
You can find lots of info here: http://www.randakksblog.com/category...ctrial-gl1000/

They have a detailed procedure to set points and timing for GL1000.
Actually I'm working on a '78 GL1000, it's been sitting for about 10 years and I already cleaned carbs, next step is ignition, plan to swap the coils to GL1500 coils.

Mario
And still riding...
I just regrets the things I haven't done.
