Hi! My name is Tonie - 85 gl1200 LTD

Just bought our first bike (trike) a 1985 Honda Goldwing limited edition 1200cc. We bought it from a man who said he used marine gas because it sat for long periods of time. I asked if we could just use regular gas. He said, no problem. After riding the bike for a couple evenings without any problems we stopped at BP station on 200, where the Subway is. We filled the tank with 85 octane and rode home. Next evening we went for a ride. About 10 miles into the ride it started running very badly. Had to keep revving it up to keep from dying out. Every time we went to shift it died. We got it home. Took all gas out and put 2 gallons of high test(i think 93 octane) and 2 oz of Sea foam in it. Still bad. Changed spark plugs. They were black. I'm stuck. I don't know what to do. I'm hoping there is someone who knows about these things who could come to me and see what they think or someone to make suggestions. As I said I am not familiar with the workings of a bike. Help please!

If the problem is gas related, it's not the octane causing it. More likely rust from the tank being filled.

The next thing is really baffling. I don't know where you are located. I know you said the BP on 200, but I'm so stupid I don't know where that is.

Please fill in your profile to include your city, state and trike info so dopes like me - and I'll bet there are others - don't have to guess.

Why ain't we ridin'?

Hello and welcome to the forum, glad to have U with us.
If it ran well with the marine grade fuel and poorly with the ethanol blend fuel they force on everyone, revert back to the marine grade in the tank and see if it runs well again. Without a location I would be able to check https://www.pure-gas.org/ and see if there is 'Real' gasoline in your area.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good info here and on the other GW forums.

In order to diagnose any issue with the '85 LTD fuel injected bike, you need the service manuals. There are three; OEM service manual, Electrical troubleshooting manual and the supplement that is specific to the LTD. To isolate the issue you have to systematically rule out possible issues. If you can't get these, I have found the best of the aftermarket is the Clymer's service manual for the 1200 bikes because it also has a good section on the fuel injection system, more of an all in one book.

Symptoms that are generally fuel related can also be throttle position sensor (TPS) related, been there. Have found that the fuel system on these bikes is quite robust and fuel issues are not as frequent as others.

Would recommend a new thread on the technical forum, detail the issue(s)/symptoms. A fuel system pressure check will let you know if it is a fuel issue.

What maintenance was done prior to your purchase and when?

I have updated one '85 LTD that was on the road and resurrected another that sat for four years.

Once the bugs are ironed out, the '85 LTD is a treat to ride and enjoy.

Good luck.

I think he needs to get all of the ethanol fuel out of that tank, be sure the fuel system is clean, and stick with using 87 octane down there at sea level.

85 octane is too low, not good for the engine.
as there are 6 Pure Gas stations in your area, it would be a good idea to stay with pure gas until you get some history behind you with the bike/trike.

I really don't think the problem is because of the octane or ethanol.

Tonie, are you getting any computer codes?
