Speedometer, cruise control , auto turn signal shutoff

I have a 1993 GL1500 and all of a sudden at the same time the speedometer, odometer, cruise control and the automatic shut off for the turn signals stopped working. Has anyone experienced this and what did you do? Thank you in advance for your help

If the speedometer doesn't work, none of that other stuff will either.

There's a gear drive on the front wheel that's probably shot. #10 on the fiche.

Replace the speedometer cable or cable drive gear box, which ever you find broken.

Advise given here is free and comes with no warranty "Caveat emptor"

So strange that I came here today to ask this exact question. Happened to me yesterday on my 1987 gl1200a. My speedo worked when I left the house and stopped after about 15 miles. Then I noticed that my turn signals stopped auto shut off at about the same time. I didn't use the cruise control yesterday.

Dennis,

Is the gear the same for 1987 as it is for 1984? I have a guy with a 3d printer that is willing to make one for me, but I need to be sure it's the same. I'm just going to have him print #11 from the fiche.

Looking at the Partzilla fiche, it appears that the speedometer gear is different for the 86 & 87. The 84 & 85 will both work but it appears they are different for the later models. In any case, it shows them as not available.

First thing to check would be the speedometer cable.

Next would be the speedometer drive gear.

If the cable is good, you may only need the plastic drive gear, part # 11 on the following fiche:

https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/ho...de/front-wheel

The plastic gear is the most vulnerable part in the drive box.

The gear box is 62.95 and the plastic gear is 18.45.

Quite a difference in prices............!!

Yeah, I think the gear should be the same, and if the guy can make one from high quality plastic, give it a go. However, 3D prints are semi-hollow to save materials. He has to tell the printer to not do that.

If he can make a usable part, there's probably a market out there. They are no longer available from Honda. However, the entire assembly is, and it's only 60 bucks.

Now: Are you sure it's the gear that is bad?

SteveSS,

The speedometer gear box for the 1984 is part # 44800-MG9-013.

The speedometer gear box for the 1987 is part # 44800-MG9-013.

Based on the same part numbers, it would appear the internal parts would be the same.

Don't know why they list a different part # for the plastic gear.

Now: Are you sure it's the gear that is bad? Not entirely, but I'm not real sure how to check it without pulling the wheel, and I'm not set up to be able to do that. It has to be either the gear or the cable, right? How hard is it to check the cable?

I'll tell you when it stopped working. I left the house one day and it was working fine. As I turned onto an on ramp for the freeway, I goosed it pretty good in third gear. Looked down to check my entry speed and my speed was reading zero. It hasn't worked since.
