Speedometer gear box 1993 gl500A

Well thank's to this forum I replaced my speedometer cable without removing anything other than the cable and cable housing. I took the front wheel off and cleaned and repacked the speedometer gear box and there was no dust shield on it so I slipped a O ring over the housing and re assembled it, then I got to thinking maybe it wasn't a good idea. Any ideas? Also I don't remember any steel washer ether unless it stayed in the hub assembly. The pictures are not of my housing but taken on line.

Thank's

I would worry that over time the o-ring will be damaged and maybe get debris where it won't be good.

Worked on the "big rigs" for 45 years now just riding my Wing whenever I can. Gets cold in Wisconsin.

Do you think that I should take it apart and run without anything in there because I won't have time to order a dust seal?

You don't say what year and model and it's not in your profile, so I'll just guess, but.

Are you saying that #19 is missing?

When this seal is missing you will get water in your bearings !
How long it will take to destroy the bearing depends on , - do you ever ride in rain ? , do you ever wash your front wheel ?

The winner is the man with most tools !
