Intermittent starting problem GL1800

It's a 2006 A6 1800 with about 34k miles. Over the last few months it has developed an annoying starting niggle I can't seem to solve. It runs very well but on an intermittent basis when I turn on the key to start up the FI light stays on solidly and I don't hear the pump priming noises. It will then crank but not start as the FI light stays on. If I turn the key off then on again it will then go through the pump priming and start normally. If I use the kill switch to turn it off and on again it will also start normally.
The things I've tried so far are:
Changed all the fuses and relays around, especially the fuel pump and FI ones.
Rebuilt the kill switch with new parts.
Changed keys to use the spare key.

The bike has a Datatool S4 alarm fitted from new which seems to be working normally but I don't know enough about bike wiring to know if the alarm could possibly be behind this fault.

The UK Hondas also have a HISS system but that seems to be working too as the light does go out on the turn of the key as it should.

Has anyone any other ideas as to what could prevent the start up sequence and keep the FI light on?

The next time it acts up try to get the error code. If you read this post you can find out how to get a code without the engine running. I think the thing to remember is do not turn the key off when you see the FI light on. Do the sequence of events listed by Hanko in this thread.

I think probably the FI/LAF relay is not powering up, which if it doesn't the FI light will remain on. If your alarm system is also an anti-theft system it could be tied into that circuit.

With no God over the state, the state then becomes not the defender of liberty but the definer of liberty.

I think you could be right. I took out the FI/LAF relay last night then turned on the ignition and the FI light stayed on as you say, which replicates exactly the intermittent fault. Changing the relay didn't cure it so the fault isn't in the relay itself. I am suspicious that my alarm system is causing a power up delay sometimes but the wiring of an alarm is way beyond my skills. I will arrange to have the alarm professionally bypassed or better still taken out and see what happens then. The alarm is an anti-theft device too and been on the bike since new so maybe it's all now starting to make sense as alarms can often play up in different ways when knocking on a bit in years.

Redwing. Thank you for the link to the FI codes which I will keep for the future. With this particular fault the bike is running perfectly fine so there are no fault codes. It just intermittently won't power up properly on the turn of the key.

I'll post back when the alarm is out.

When you go to clean the bike, do you take it to a car wash? Is bike stored inside? How old is your battery? A.G.M. battery or wet cell?

I always hand wash it with a bucket and cloth, never at a car wash or even use a hose. The bike is kept in a heated garage. The battery is A.G.M but I've no idea how old it is as it was there when I bought the bike about 15 months ago. I do use an Optimate charger when left but the battery seems fine when starting (when the ignition starting sequence runs properly).

Bike is booked in next week at a main Honda dealer who is also Datatool alarm approved to fully remove the alarm. I decided it is too risky not to have the approved people doing it in case there is a risk of permanently immobilising the bike. I'll post back the results as it may help others in the future with this sort of problem.

I'm pretty sure my problem if fixed. I had the aftermarket alarm removed a week ago and have ridden the bike for about 500 miles since which involved numerous start ups and the fault hasn't happened at all. In the end I got a specialist in alarms to come to my house to remove it as the Honda dealer didn't seem very confident when I spoke to them. The guy who took out the alarm confirmed that the immobilser part of the alarm does use that circuit to prevent starting so could well have been the cause.

Dave0430....another great diagnosis, well done and thank you very much.
