No HiBeam on my GL1500
 
Hello, I'm looking for some suggestions. I have two gl1500's and cant get the hi beam to work on one of them. I took the head light assembly out of the one cycle and tried in the other cycle. the headlight works just fine in the second GL1500. I then took a 12 V test light and checked the electrical connector. On both bikes, if the switch is set to low beam, the bottom left and top left connector have power. If I switch to hi beam, then the top left and top right connector have power. The bottom right connector apparently is ground.

So I am getting the same results on the electrical connectors on both bikes, yet neither head light works on hi beam on bike one but both work fine on bike 2. Any thoughts on what I should check next?

Given your good description my first thoughts are you have a bad high beam relay. The relay is degraded to a point where it will no longer power the big high amp draw of the headlight. What is confusing you is the relay is good enough to power the little draw from the test light. Very common and you are not the first to be confused by this phenomenon. :)

As a quick test to see if the ground was an issue, I tapped into the heavy green ground wire that came out of the back of the connector and ran another ground wire to the frame. Still didn't make any difference. However, I noticed if I switched from low to high beam with the headlight assembly unplugged, the blue high beam indicator illuminates on the dash. With the head light assembly plugged in, the indicator does not come on when I switch to high beam. I'll try swapping relays and see if this make a difference.

Spray some contact cleaner in the switch,1500 will give you a startling surprise at night when you hit the hi beam and nothing is there,try it,itís cheap fix

Pretty sure if it were the switch it would test bad with both the test light and the headlight would not work. Sounds to me, much more likely, it is a relay or less likely a wiring issue. Of course I have been wrong before. Flip flop the high and low beam relays to see if the problem follows?????? :)

If it was a ground problem neither high nor low would work.

Might be the Switch itself, for the Hi/Low Beams... I had one go bad on me; could only figure it out by opening it up to disassemble and reveal a bad contact.




ps: I have extra switches F/S

FIXED!! It was a bad relay. Luckily I had a couple spare i purchased last year and that took care of the problem. A little pain getting to the relays since I had to remove a saddle bags but all is well. Thanks for the help!!

You actually don't have to remove the saddle bag in order to remove the Fuse/Relay box... rather, just remove the 2 bolts that hold the box in place... then the box can be slide Forward/Outward with a bit of effort.
