Question for Austone users.

On a week long trip to Florida last week, I lost both rear shocks (Progressive 416s). The bike would bounce a lot when we'd hit a dip. I could hear it rubbing a bit when we would bottom out but didn't seem too bad. When we got home I pulled the seat and saddle bags and noticed that the tire had worn the inner fender all the way through on both sides. A few wires and air lines will need to be repaired but my question is, have any of you experienced your tire wearing away the inner fender or was this caused by the blown out shocks?

Mine would rub on the front inner fender. That is normal. I have not had any other rubbing issue.

Yeah, both halves on mine are worn all the way through on both right and left sides. It was a 1600 mile trip but I didn't notice the shock leaking until about 700 miles into it. If this is normal for this size tire, I would patch the holes and zip tie everything away from the fender. If it was caused by the loss of air pressure and oil in the shocks, I would replace the inner fenders after the shocks were repaired. Thanks for the reply by the way.

Same here, but the rubbing disappears if you tie back (forward actually) the front part of the fender.


I've never tried running Zero air pressure in my progressives, but if I did then no surprise if the rubbing increased.

I don't have an Austone, but I am running a 185/70-16 car/van tire. I had to do a lot of trimming to make it all fit. Under normal riding I get no rubbing, but over big bumps it does. If I had no pressure in the shocks, 416's I would bet it would rub a lot and wear things out quickly.

Too bad there was not some alarm, or blinking light we could install easily to warn if the air goes down.
Maybe if you got a 3 tire TPMS and set the 3rd one for whatever pressure you run in the shocks, this would warn if the pressure dropped. Just thinking

I checked into the damage a little closer and found that the radio antenna cable was worn through. The 5 pin plug for passenger headset worn through and the air hose that goes to the right saddle bag is worn through. I could live without these but if I start doing that, where does it stop. A guy could do without a huge part of a Goldwing if he had to. I think what I will end up doing is rebuild the shocks. (parts should be here tomorrow) then temporarily repair the inner fender sections. If the fender repair holds up with the repaired shock, then I will replace the damaged parts.. If not, I may go to the smaller diameter 195/55r16 or similar.
