Eng rattle on my 94 gl 1500

Hi Wondering if anyone has had this before. My gl 1500 has 33,000 miles on it I am using rotella 20/40 oil in the summer months when the temp is hot outside. The engine makes a rattling sound when at 3,000 rpms dosen't matter what gear the bike is in only does it on acceleration only when getting off the throttle it stops. Also this only happens when the temp gauge goes over the half way mark ( it is fine before the temp goes up ) It is not overheating and the coolant is full. It is not a lifter or rod knock it does not sound like a wrist pin either. I was going to change the alternator insulator rubbers as i do not know if they are original or not but i cannot see how these would make the sound only when the engine heats up. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would change the alternator insulator rubbers . They are only around $5 each and your description of the problem sounds like these .

Any chance it has a timing advance trigger wheel? Try some higher octane gas and see if the problem goes away.

I've been using premium fuel from the day I got the bike. I was thinking the alternator insulators myself I purchase them about 3 weeks ago just haven't put them on yet but I'm going to give that a shot

Premium fuel is not needed or recommended unless it has had an advanced timing wheel installed.

Sure sounds like pre-ignition from your description of symptoms. If the timing hasn't been messed with, I wonder if you have some carbon buildup on the pistons. Squirting water in the intake while the engine is running could help it. Also some techron in the tank for a while might help.

Im riding my 7th Wing which happens to be a 94 GL1500A with 44k. I frequently ride with a church group here in the hot humid weather of Tampa Bay. When I bought this it was making an odd noise I attributed to a tired acceleration issue. I drained the tank. Refueled with ethanol-free and 4oz of MMO. About the second time I started it up it backfired through the carb (puked up some crap no doubt) and its been running fantastic ever since. Starts up the first second I hit the starter. Like you I used to run with Rotella but with this bike I decided to go with a higher, more expensive, grade of motorcycle oil and I think that has helped too. I also use MMO in every fresh oil change. This stuff does everything they claim it does. I couldn't be more pleased. After you've changed out the rubber mounts, and hopefully that works, you may want to consider the MMO additive as it really does help. Neither you or I have very many miles for the age of our bikes which suggests they had periods of storage time off and on. To keep them on the edge you have to sometimes think outside the box. Im sure there's more and better advice on here you can use, but after running 28 bikes, most of them used, I follow my instincts and simply do what keeps working; and its not what is always recommended. there is nothing special about Honda's oils, they are obtained from the Lowest Bidder, and that supplier changes from time to time.

I used to use Delo 400SE 15w40 when I owned gl1500s.

when that went away, and I bought an 1800, I changed to Rotella because Walmart sells it for ~$13/gallon

I have used T5 10w30, but changed to T6 5w40 for a personal reason.
IMO, the ADG problem is caused at engine startup by folks who wrap up the engine as soon as it starts..... using a 5w oil will drastically reduce the load on the ADG as it tries to spin up the Alternator when the engine starts.
( I have seen some folks state it is because people wrap up the engine to ~6,000 rpm )
Whatever.............

I make it a point, to never touch the throttle when starting the bike, until after it idles back down and the alternator is working.
Replacing an ADG gearset is not cheap.

for those unaware of the Rotella oils, the T4, T5, T6 are pure synthetics.
at least the ones I have been buying are.
