Gl 1500 1999 donít start in gear

Hi folks

This freind shows up telling me that lately bike donít stat in gear and often stall while ridding.

My checks

Clutch switch is good and well in contact with lever.
Kick stand switch is also good in upper and lower position.

I tried to check continuity in wires but there seem to be a resistance.

My Honda shop manual is for a 97 and color of wires do not match.

Can anybody help me.

Many thanks

Norm.

Does it crank in gear but not start or will not crank. A good place to start might be the kill switch. Jump the two wires together. Now try it out. Kill switch can make the starter not function and engine cut out. Easy place to start.

Worked on the "big rigs" for 45 years now just riding my Wing whenever I can. Gets cold in Wisconsin.

There are two switches on the clutch. Make sure you are testing the correct one.

Side stand switch also has two contacts, one is for the light, the other is for ECU input. Check both not only the light.

Also, the wiring diagrams and wire colors of 1993-2000 models are the same.

The spot where the clutch lever contacts the neutral start switch is probably the no start problem when in gear. If you have aftermarket levers that could be the problem. I inserted a piece of plastic shim and glued it in place to solve the problem. There is no adjustment for the switch, not sure if it's from years of wear and not sure if a new switch would fix it.

It was a little embarrassing to not be able to start the bike one time when I stalled it and had to try and wheel it off the road!
