Question Newer 2014 Engine in 2001 frame...

Hello all. Long time since I posted, and this should be a good one: I have a good 2001 frame and am looking at a 2014 engine to shoe into it. I'm thinking frame mounts should be the same, plumbing should be similar and the plumbing from the '14 is available if it isn't quite the same as the '01. Beside ECM/ECU and wire-harness differences, what physically would prevent that? Ideas? Anyone attempted this before? Thanks.

This is going to be interesting. I would guess the engine itself isn't different and should fit. I would have on hand wiring schematics for both the 2001 and the 2014 for comparison as well as a service manual for both years. The current ECM may even work.

I haven't got the engine yet: as mentioned, looking at the scenario. There's a crashed but running write-off close by, and I am contemplating. Will keep you appraised. Any more thoughts are welcomed. Running a '14 harness on an '01 would be a nightmare, so I'm going to concentrate on resolving whatever the '14 engine needs to back-date it. First things first: get a hold of a '14 service manual.

Should be no problem mechanically. The wiring and some electrical components would need to be switched.

My guess is the main differences between the '01 and '14 engine won't be the engine block itself as much as all the associated engine "doodads", such as the differences between the '88 and '93. Definitely want to use all the '01 wiring, and if you have a full set of the '01 doodads (little valves, sensors etc, maybe manifolds and other plumbing) to put on the '14 block seems you should be good to go...

In addition to the '14 service manual online parts fiches for the two years are likely to be a good resource to tell if any particular gizmo that looks the same between years actually isn't...

Ought to be an interesting project...

It would be even more interesting if someone could actually put a GL1800 engine into a GL 1500 frame! Now that would be a challenge! Imagine the power and performance with the 1500 ride and comfort. Wiring harness might drive one to drink big time.

Can we get back to the purpose of the thread, please? The objective: late engine, early 1800. Thanks.

You are just going to have to learn to live with threads going off topic, they almost always do.
