That was all luck and no pilot input. Happened just too fast for it to be anything but fate.

There was definitely pilot input there.

The ship went down a wave trough, and the helo, already light on the skids, went airborne. As the ship moved in the trough, the upper structure of the ship moved towards the now airborne helicopter.To avoid a collision with the rotors (which would have been catastrophic), the pilot pulled way back on the cyclic - but he overreacted, and did not give it enough (or any) collective, which caused the tail (anti-torque) rotor strike on the deck. That broke the tail rotor, and started the rotation, at which point the pilot was more or less a passenger. Only thing the pilot could do at that point is dump the collective, hope it lands on the deck and doesn't slide overboard, which is exactly what he did.
