Last Wed night, at about 8:23 PM, we were sitting in front of the TV when we heard such a Gawd awful BOOM BOOM. Ran outside to see what I was sure would be a lot of smoke rising. Turned out that it was the Space Shuttle returning. It passed directly over our Park at about 15000 ft and about Mach 2.

Never got to see it launch, but it surely announced its arrival. WOW

If it happens at night when you are sleeping, it will definitely wake you up.

I ran outside that night hoping to hear it, but we didn't get it here in Myakka City. Some of the other parts of our county and state got it good.

I did get to see the ISS come across just at sunset the same night. I see alot of satelites at sunset, they fade out quickly just after crossing over head, but the ISS was the first time I've seen something go from horizon to horizon and out shine any star visible at the same time.

Can you tell, I'm still a kid when it comes to space!!

When I was a kid in high school at Edwards AFB you could always tell the new kids, they were the ones that jumped when a sonic boom rattled the place. There was a lot of work going on there in the 50s with transonic aircraft. For all the noise and window rattling I never did hear of anyone having a window broken. Odd since Edwards probably experienced more sonic booms than just about anywhere in the world.

I can't swear to the truth of the story, but I've heard tales of a plane back in the 70's that came in over the Gulf of Mexico towards Tampa. It was in the airspace that has the limit to speed in certain altitudes.

They thought it might be a drug runner so interceptors were scrambled from the panhandle. To get there on time, both went supersonic.

The story says windows were broken on St. Pete beach.

Sounds good!

Sonic boom intensity probably varies proportionately with the size of the A/C producing it-or the size of the bow wave. I used to be able to almost set my clock by the sonic boom of the Concord when itwas in operation. Yet that bird was probably 60-90 nm south of my location when it passed. I can tell you that the sonic boom of the shuttle was the loudest I have ever heard. I think that plate glass was in peril there.
