Hi everyone, i got two small ammo boxs today for free to mount to the trailer for some extra storage, i wanted to paint them black, im assuming they have a special coat of something on them from the factory but i could be wrong, are there any tricks to painting them or should i just sand lightly, prime, and go for it... thanks dave

I've got a couple fifty caliber boxes I've had for thirty years that I've painted a few times over the years. I've used a paint brush and Rustoleum no primer, rattle can enamel with primer, and even sprayed them with two part urethane paint after an epoxy primer. All paint jobs looked okay and lasted well.

Yes I would scuff them a bit then clean with a prep solvent prior to paint.

Ammo boxes last forever with any kind of paint. The primerless Rustoleum and Hammerites are ideal and have worked well on mine since the 1970s.
