Saw the little bast**d zig zagging in the ditch and when he/she turned toward the bush I thought I was clear. It did the fastest one eighty I ever seen and ran right out in front of me. Nailed it just behind the ribcage.

Managed to keep the rubber on the road and no personal injury. The bike is still rideable but the forks are bent I think and most of the plastic and mounting brackets on the front wheel will need replacement.

Fortunately, it was a small deer - maybe a year or year and a half old.

It doesn't take much of a deer to do a bunch of damage.
Great that you kept it up.
What a sin for such a beautiful machine.

Glad you are ok,

I am still in the "almost hit a deer" club. I was riding in the UP of Michigan and a deer crossed the road from left to right in the air and his feet never touching the ground. He was like a missile with fur. Eyes wide open mine were.

I hit one of those missles and it turned the front wheel and laid the bike right over on it's side, chasing me down the road on it's crash bar.

You are lucky if you can hit one without side momentum.

Otherwise it's surf city.

I'm going to fully assess the damage tomorrow evening. If the front wheel is still aligned (undamaged forks) I may not do an insurance claim. Doing a paint match on the front fender may be the most expensive.

I am actually impressed by the minimal damage - these bikes are beasts. I'm betting that impact would have caused several thousand $ damage to a car.

I'll keep you posted . . .

Miles,

Just tuned on to this channel and caught your story.

Wow oh wee.... I sure am glad that you kept that 1800 right side up. You must have instinctively "banked into" the deer just as it hit you and offset the side momentum.

What ever you did, it was right.

My son is there in Winnipeg for the next two weeks, if you PM me a phone number, I will forward to him. He used to have my gl1200 and gave it to me. Now he has a FJR1300.
