I have a technical role in company that makes stuff. Part of my job is fixing things that have gone wrong.

For years we have talked about having a data base that is searchable so you could enter key words describing a symptom, and up would come examples of past histories of similar symptoms and remedies, experiences, etc.

The technical issues about setting up such a database have remained unsurmountable to our IT department. Today it suddenly occured to me - the perfect model of the type of data base - complete with all the search capability that I am looking for - you guessed it, this forum.

I want to set up an internal forum to run on the company intrAnet. Accessable by our various global offices. Moderated by a chosen few.

A quick internet search shows me that there are lots of options for 'free ware' forum software.

My intention is to initially set up a demonstration. I might then persuade the bean-counters to part with some of thir precious money to buy decent software if that is the way to go.

Any folks out there got advise on the merits / demerits of different freebee software??

A colleague of mine and I set up a program to monitor preventive maintenance, modification status and completion rates with an upward reporting system for the FAA about 17 years ago. I know that was in the dark ages of PCs but the program we used to create the relational database was dBase. The dBase program can be used in its original format or you can write in it's high level language to format and design screens for input and out put. dBase is still around and has been updated a lot from the old days with faster operation and much more graphics capability. Our program was used by various FAA maintenance offices across the country. One thing we learned early was to use a compiler and compile our program to make it nearly impossible for users to get into the works and corrupt the program.

I'm a big fan of the SimpleMachines software

It runs sport-touring.net and (more than) a few others.

My name is Rusty. I'm an enthusiast of things that ride, drive and fly.
