My laptop came with Windows 8.1 and I've been using Windows for decades - from 3.1 through Vista, ME, XP, 7, and 8.1. It seems each new version took up more and more disk space, and RAM, and ran slower. Last year I decided to split the laptop disk in two - I keep 8.1 for some of my applications that need it, but for everyday use I boot up in Linux Mint. I used various versions of linux back when I was working so I'm somewhat familiar with it, but even if you've never used it you can get up to speed with it pretty quickly, and it's a much better OS - it's just too bad that a lot of Windows-based programs won't run on it...
