I had to look, that's a nice one; more than I'd need for what I'd use it for.

Mine has the same specs + the card reader and video card and I can refurbish it for less.

Dave,

at this point, I suspect just replacing the motherboard in your Desktop would be the best option, just make sure it supports Win7 and a minimum of 8 GB of RAM.

I agree, just have to get some help figuring out what to buy, all that is kind of over my head. What it has now is a biostar TA880GB+.

They make "Display Port" to HDMI converters, A short cable with Display Port plug on one end, and the other end a dongle with female HDMI. Not very expensive, either. Microcenter.com sells them, amongst others. I have one for my laptop....

So what leads you to believe that the motherboard is failing?

If you do decide to try Linux most distributions have a support forum, I would suggest that you visit the forums of a few distributions and get a feel for the community behind them.

As Linux is open source all distributions have access to the same programs and code. How many of those programs are packaged for installation, what they install by default, what tools they provide for customizing and most important what help you get when you run into problems is what sets them apart.

Advise given here is free and comes with no warranty "Caveat emptor"

Ken.

Dave,

let's just get together and let me look at your PC and see if the mobo is actually bad?

What is the main symptoms of what is happening to it?

If you just want something to play with, I would check e-bay for an HP 8510W. I have an 8510P and an 8510W that work fine for websurfing, although I have upgraded mine to 4 GB of RAM. They use DDR2 RAM.

There is a listing on ebay including Win XP and office 2007, for $49.95 plus $14.15 shipping (at least to my zipcode) they are T7500 Core 2 duo running 800 MHz with 2 gig of ram. You have to look at the pictures to see the spec.

The 8510P and W have a card reader and an HDMI port. The HDMI ports went away on the later models in favor of display ports.

If you are looking for a more upscale machine you might consider the 8560W. I have one at work. With a docking station and active display port to DVI adapters you can run 4 monitors (I am using the laptop screen, the VGA output on the docking station and two display ports on the dock). The 8440W/8740W units will only run two displays at the same time.

Spending more time on my wife's hobby than the wing.

2 of the front USB ports have quit working. Chris Lemke looked at it.
