However they did it is water under the bridge and I'm sure they are not the only ones. As little as I use this thing I really don't need it so for now I'll see about disabling everything on it except the phone part and look to go back to a simple phone in the near future.

just slide from top down, turn off WiFi and it will stay that way until you turn it back on.

or, go into Settings and disable WiFi altogether.

personally, Dave,
it is really not that big of a deal....

I hardly ever get any emails that can be traced to me going into a store....
very few retailers can afford the fees that Google charges....

Bass Pro Shops, oh yeah they can.

miss ma and pop? uh no, they can't.
Not even QT gas stations go for that WiFi crap.

or McDonald's, they don't ever bug me with email and I use their WiFi quite a bit....

I really think you are over reacting to the one email you received.

The next day and each day since I have gotten an email from bass pro shop.
I have in the past asked such creations to remove me from their mailing list.
They usually comply as they don't need bad publicity.

It has been every day sine I went in there. I added them to the spam list.

As long as they're sending you emails, they figure your still alive.

Hey Dave,
Go to the bottom of the email. You should find a box to opt-out of advertisements.

Getting emails from them is not the big issue, how they got my email address is.

that is because Google has your email linked to that phone's unique ID #

which is a requirement to find your phone in case you temporarily loose it, and need to make it ring.

or, to log in and force that phone to do a full Factory Reset which makes it useless for anyone else. As it will be blacklisted with Google

The advert part of this is a relatively new "enhancement" to their scheme of tracking our phones.

IIRC, there is somewhere on google where you can turn that feature OFF.
I will look for it.

how they are linking

People can opt out of Internet tracking through an industry program called AdChoices, but few know about it or bother.

AdChoices brings up a website that will interogate your browser to see where you have been.

if you then tell it to OPT OUT ALL,
it will then go thru the full list again, and forward info to the advertisors that you want out....

that info is stored in your cookies for the advertisors to use.

I am still looking for a way to prevent the WiFi in a store from linking to advertising... so far, just turning off the WiFi when in a store will make that a Known Fact. if they can't see you, they won't know you are there.

this is the result of my use of AdChoice
