Th difference between ratchet straps and block and tackle

I designed and 90% completed a canoe but due to circumstances set the project aside a few years back, using ratchet straps to hold it tight to the garage ceiling.

Now with a bit of time on my hands I decided to finish it so started backing off the straps. I failed to realize that once there isn't any strap wound on the drums they were't going to hold any weight. The canoe dropped six feet to the concrete.

The good news is that it missed me and the Goldwing. It was tough enough to only get a small dent in one end and a scratch in the middle. Easy fix.

Next time it goes up I'll use a block and tackle. I can't remember how I got it in place with the ratchet straps but they are a securing device not a lowering device.

True friends do not urge you on from the sidelines. They march with you.
They are warriors, not cheerleaders.
