Hi, Dallas resident.
I'll throw a cpl more things in. Have the brushes checked out in alt, and at minimum, regrease the rear bearing. Probably better to replace the bearing. I regrease bearings all the time on alts., and works good for me. But, you don't want it spinning in rear housing. If anything beside a flat will let you down, it's the alternator.
Do you know the history of u-joint/driveline servicing? The splines could be real dry, and the boot may be shot. Also, at 40k, my splines were pretty dry. Use only 60%+ moly !!!! Look at the boot right at the last back rib, at the top. See if the u-joint has rubbed a slit through it. My 90 was worn that way, and split clear off the swingarm.
I've come across a bunch of them that way. I put a Valkyerie boot on it. The only right thing to do.
