Well my wife bought me a 2008 GL1800 Goldwing. Now the question arises as to whether or not I should purchase the extended warranty.

After reading the fine print the extended warranty does not cover the GPS, radio, speakers and few other items.

It does cover the ABS, though the contract doesn't specify it as it was probably written up before ABS breaking systems were being installed.

So I put this question out to others with more experience than I. Do I need it, or do you feel that if anything really major is going to go south it will do so within the bikes initial 3 year warranty? I should add that the EW is 4 years for a total of 7 at a cost of $1500.00

Thank you.

Howdy...not sure how much the extended warranty is or what the time frame it covers... but often they give you some time to decide. I'm not a fan of EW's.... they seem to be a bit of a rip-off and few items are worth it. You should know in the inital 3 years whether you have purchased a 'lemon'...but given the GW's track record.... I'd say invest the $ and use it if you need it in years 4+.

It might be worth it if you plan on keeping teh Wing for the 6 years, otherwise they are so reliable that you probably won't need the extra warranty.

I work in a Honda car dealership service dept. so I see extended warranties pretty often and a lot of them are not worth the paper they are written on. Some are OK but I would not buy one on a Honda especially or anything else either. What it is, is an insurance policy and they are betting you will spend more buying it than they will spend repairing your vehicle and most of the time they win. Too bad Honda doesn't offer the certification program on bikes. You can bring a honda auto in when the warranty is up, have it certified and extend the warranty to 7 years or 100,000 mi.

One thing about the extended warranty is the roadside assistance. I believe that it is worth it for that alone.

We bought it for the Odyssey van, and when the trailer light converter blew up (literally) in the Lake Louise parking lot we called Honda Plus and they arranged a tow to the nearest Honda dealer, which happens to be Calgary. A pretty expensive tow otherwise. My wife has also called them three times with flat tires and a dead battery. With two little kids in the van and 30 below outside she was glad she had it.

I never bought an ext. warrenty, till I bought my wife her Ford Exploder. I must say,it has paid for itself more than once, but look at what it is......an Explorer! I think the cash would go a long way towards a repair after the regular warreny expired. My first Goldwing never saw the shop floor for 19 years, and I'm a lousy mechanic! Bulletproof, if you keep up on maint.

Welcome DFen911. !

As reliable as GW's are, I personally wouldn't bother buying an EW. I bought a warranty once on a new Impala SS in '95 and never had to use it. If you feel the need to buy it, offer the dealership half of what the original asking price is and they'll probably take you up on the offer. If not..don't buy it. No biggie.

PS - If your wife is giving away any more 1800's, send one my way...heck...I'd even pay for shipping!

Without a ride...for now.
