Just wondering, how many have ridden their bike to the top of Pikes Peak and what kind of experience is it?

I have driven to the top in a car. I would never take a street bike up there. The top half was damp gravel roads with plenty of sharp turns and NO guardrails!

I took my 1800 up there this past July. Excellent trip - fully recommend to any experienced rider. There is about 4 miles of gravel - hard pack at the top, but can be rode with any bike. Breathtaking views - it was on my bucket list. Totally enjoyed it.

They must have really improved the road. In 1996 they charged a $5 toll to drive beyond Santa's Wonderland (I think that's what its called). The toll was to help maintain the gravel road. Back then, they claimed the weather was too extreme to hard surface the gravel part.

Great ride, like any mountain road don't out ride the road or your ability [not judging just saying] there's gravel not good when wet.

Happier then a slinky on an escalator.

I would think the road would be dryer later int he summer as the afternoon rains subside a bit before going into fall. The area is subject to rain about mid afternoon (2:00 pm) so keep that in mind. The gravel should not be too bad and would be well worth the ride. If you want a road that is paved to 13,000 feet try Mount Evans.

Thanks to all who have replied. I sent an Email off to the contact person for Pikes Peak, inquiring as to road conditions and this was the reply. Maybe add it to your list of must do/want to do rides. Lew Wilkie (wilkoi)

Hello Lew,
Motorcycles are allowed on the road. Currently there are 3 miles of the 19 miles unpaved. This is between 10-13 mile of the highway and the rest is paved. The road is very hard packed and cared for. We get lots of visitors riding their motorcycles and have had no major concerns or complaints. Please let me know if you have any additional questions and thank you for your interest in Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain.

Sounds like they have improved the road a lot in recent years. One other work of caution, the high altitude can make you light headed and short of breath and give you headaches.

Don't forget the camera!

I've been up it on a Harley Sportster, and a GW1100I. The 1100 handled it better, more power. Some day, hope to take the 1800 up there.

Here is mine at the top.... as you can see, these do ok on the road.... just get real dirty..

They do NOT allow you to bring your trailer up the road ...... forced to leave it behind in the parking lot.
