Looking to by a 1500 Goldwing, 1988 - 1994 in my price range ( 5,000 - 6,000 ). The question I have is what is considered high mileage for this type of bike. There is seams to be lots out there with 50,000 km to 200,000 km on them. Most people say as long as it was maintained well it should be OK.... But my guess would be to stay away for anything with more than 200,000 km IMO.



Don't want to get into repairs right away, I know there is no guarantee's but is there some general rule of thumb when it comes to mileage.

Welcome to the site!
How it was used/maintained is way more important than mileage. Once you get over 100k, you can expect some stuff to just need attention. I would choose a Goldwing with 100k on it over one with 10k that sits for long periods of time unless they can show they store it very properly.
There were some improvments in the '95 and later models. I paid $10k for my 2000 back in 2005 and it had 15k on the odometer. You should be able to get a good bike in your range.

Are you the sort who would tear-down any bike you'd get, to go over Everything?... If so, then it doesn't matter what the mileage is on your pending-wing... so go for the highest milage one you can find.

If you're not planning on tearing it down as soon as you get it, then keep this in mind:
-100k is a major service interval (Timing belts/bearings)
-20k is the service interval for alternator (cleaning brushes)

$500 in parts is about what you can expect to pay, to do Full Maintenance on a wing around 100k... and you can do most all of it yourself too.

IF you are patient and willing to do some major work, you could consider getting a projet bike? I got a 98 with 50k miles, for $3500 and put another couple grand into fixing up all the stuff that needed to be done.
there is a shifter issue for early 1500's
There was a change in the headlight shape in 98
Go as new as you can, regardless of age or miles, unless the previous owner can supply maint. records, you will be doing some catch up maint.
I found that not much was done to my bike and I used this website to hit all the things that needed to be done.

I got my 88 1500 with about 168,000 miles = 270,370 kilometers on it I think.
I rode it home over 700 miles when I bought it, rode around for awhile, then put new tires on it, ones I took off were actually still good for awhile yet but I wanted others for long trips.

I have done very little to it since I bought it.
Changed oil and filter, you always have to do that.
Replaced a throttle cable that broke, about $10 for me.
Put on the new tires for making LONG trips.
Just general stuff always needed on anything.

I think that was about all I did, maybe changed the fork oil?

I rode over 10K miles on her and that's all I've done that I can recall off hand. Still got same brake pads that she had when I bought her also.
Since I ride some large trips I was going to change brake pads all around though what's on her are still good for a long time yet.

I don't think mileage matters much at all, it's how well it's been cared for. Mine seems to have been well cared for.
Us riders that take big trips rack up miles fast, but then again we may take better care of our bikes than many people that only ride 200 miles a month. I know lots of folks that as long as something starts it's fine and they never get more than 50 miles from home, they don't take care of much.

Most of us that run 2K trips and such, well we don't want broke down 500-1,000 miles from home so we probably do more than is really needed for maintenance on our stuff.

They will go 400,000 miles or more if taken care of w/o tearing apart the motor. Preventative maintenance.

The engines just keep on running with regular oil changes. It's the other parts will wear out faster, forks, shocks, alternators and other stuff.

Do you know what the problem was on the early 1500 with the shifter ?

" Go as new as you can " is also what our local motorcycle mechanic says to.
