So as I'm riding, I'm using my phone to decide roads to take (at stops) and just watching the GPS while riding.
Have made a few routes using Google map's and then exporting them out to the garmin. So far so good. Its fast and painless and im getting the hang of it all. Gonna use it on a trip tomorrow.

The 2797 aggravated me again today with how dumb the routing algorithms are.

Setting in a hospital parking lot and want to find an Arby's for a bite to eat.
It wants me to go around the other side of the complex and exit on the north side and take a side road to get back to 91st E-W and then go west.

Note, I am sitting at the south entrance just off of 91st Street and all I have to do is make a little bitty U-turn to leave the parking spot, turn right, turn right and I'm on 91st Street and headed west. No traffic lights to mess with, no side traffic roads. Just on my way.

Well, the 2797 refuses to give up on the route it wants to take, even though I am already on 91st Street it keeps displaying the other route.... then when I pass the side street, it still refuses to drop it off the screen. Just to make things worse, it quits giving audible turn info. Like the usual 1-1/4 mile take a left at ICB Bank, or at the next Traffic Light, take a left. it does both of those... this is not the first time I have noticed the lack of audio turn info when you start in a big parking lot and refuse to use its' routing map. Has happened to me now in about 5 different hospital parking lots. Mardonna has seen too many of those places this month.

Okay, make it to Arby's, and the 1st one it had for me to go to was in a bad location, lots of left turns, but it was the "closest" by half a mile.... as the bird flies it is, it does not computer road miles until you accept the route. that too, is making me mad.

At Arby's I decide to test it again. We are in a big major parking lot for a metro center complex.... I tell it to go Home.... it don't have a clue how to get out of that parking lot. I just cancel that, wait until I am actually out on a major 1 mile square street then tell it to go home... now that, it can figure out.

Tomorrow, I am going to call Garmin and give them a piece of my mind.

My old Garmin 2730 can walk circles around the 2797 when it comes to getting you there in the most logical way possible. that unit is 15 years old now...

Let me know how the convo with garmin goes. Lol
My 2595 so far is working well, other than can't hear the audio that well with the helmet on.
Trailblazer.....how do you import a route from google straight into your garmin?
I'd like that! I'm heading from Ohio back to MN on Monday, and it'll be mostly interstate as I need to make good time.
The trip here over the upper peninsula was gorgeous!

OK guys I found this posted by Ed Kruse on the GL1800Riders forums. It deals with Basecamp and some video lessons on how to get the most out of Basecamp.
Click Here ---->>> Link

Here is also a copy of what he posted. I found the videos so far to be fairly informative.

Someone sent me this article and I thought it might be useful to some.

I find that watching videos is a lot easier for me. These are what I used to gain a good understanding of Basecamp.

Hanko,

that guy does a pretty good job of explaining how to use the tools.

will take a lot of work for me to feel like using basecamp though, it is not intuitive in just letting me start a basic route "Oologah to Atlanta, GA" and then look to see what I might want to do with that... Google maps does just that, and I'm a lot happier with that method of routing.

as mentioned earlier, I am getting very upset with the multiple waypoint duplication making up different routes that use a lot of the same waypoint... that is cluttering up the GPS database.

3:30 PM hung up with a nice lady from Garmin...
seems that my copy of Garmin Express was out of date, so that caused an error.

And, when she had me inspect the software version on my 2797, both the device software, and the maps have been updated since I got it just 4 weeks ago.

So, folks, if you have a 2797 and have NOT updated the GPS firmware to version 5.0 which was released 30 Jun 2015 then you need to do so.

Bottom line right now is, I am to finish up installing all of the updates, and then select a route and purposely drive the wrong way and see if the crazy thing will properly recalculate and follow the new route AND give me audible prompts....

Before now, a route selected in the middle of a corn field confuses the 2797, and it will never catch up to the route even though I finally get back onto the street that it wanted... AND it quit giving me voice prompts.

Has anyone seen this menu before on the 2797, or any Garmin for that matter?

It just showed up after the firmware update today.

I think you can see what intrigued me, it is keeping a record of the restaurants that we like.

4:40 PM,

hmmm, I just updated the Firmware about 2 hours ago.
there was just a line that gave the old version number, and the new number.
I installed that.

Now, after that was done, and the new maps have been installed,
it is telling me that new version of the Firmware needs to be installed, and it is listing all of the improvements that update has in it.

it just finished that... now to go play with it in the car and see if the miss-routing occurs.

. ummmm, not so fast jack, it wants to do some more updates, folks.... read the Garmin Express screens very closely.

.

Whew!!!

It is FIXED !!!

It now recalculates, and the voice prompts are working again!

It was not in my head, and I was NOT going crazy.

The GPS was broken, and I know darn good and well, that is why this one went back to the Factory to be Refurbed.... only they did NOT do a damn thing to it, and just resold it again.

At least now, I can go about my business, read the lessons on BaseCamp and see IF there is any hope of me ever accepting that POS program for anything useful.
