I don't get it.

If you found that post offensive or in bad taste what does it mater if it's posted on an old thread, a new thread or a thread of its own?

Advise given here is free and comes with no warranty "Caveat emptor"

I found it neither in bad taste or offensive. Just unrelated to the original post.

And there will never be a complete solution that will satisfy everyone. That particular post wasn't even a year old, so the one year rule wouldn't have done anything to stop the post.

What this has been about, for me, is the newbie posting to the 5 year old thread asking for help on a similar problem he may be having. If nobody catches it, his request can go unanswered and he will probably never return.

Perhaps some sort of a tutorial for new members would help. Maybe that could also instruct them to fill out their profiles. And no, I do not consider "209" or "Midwest", acceptable profile locations.

Why ain't we ridin'?

I didn't see it as off topic.

The original post was about a cracked fairing and getting rid of the radio.

The response was to go naked, after that it did get a little disjointed.

Can't you cut a crazy Canuck some slack?

Okay, " I thought it was a bit wonky" and moved it....
but note I said "moved it"...

it can be put back if ya'll want it...

I rarely delete stuff, it just moves out of sight.

I have read and gleaned good info from old threads because I was interested and did not even realize it was "old" until later.
There are no threads older than many of our bikes!!! Should we lock those up and ignore them also?
I also agree with this. This is a thread that hasn't been posted to in 90 days, but can still receive relevant postings. Locking the thread would not be beneficial, in my opinion.

I see some people's justification for closing old threads because of 'newbies posting irrelevant stuff' to old threads. This, I don't believe is justification for closing the thread, but rather an opportunity to educate the newbie. If what they posted was completely off topic, somebody can make a polite post letting them know, and that they should create a new thread, or find another thread that is completely on topic with their question and add to that thread. Just because somebody's new and doesn't understand the etiquette doesn't mean we shut down a thread because of it. If the newbie posts a relative question that was already posted/answered in the thread, again a polite post letting them know that it's good practice to read through the entire thread just in case their question was already asked. Again, it's about education. If, however, the newbie posts a valid questions, that's on topic and relevant to the thread topic, then I see no harm in this. Or, even better is when a thread was left hanging - the OP never figured out the problem, but years later somebody else does and posts the(ir) solution, which will likely be very helpful to others.

So as it turns out after 700 days after the last post I can no longer post on my own threads.

if you need to open one of your threads, just start a 'new thread' with the material you want to add on to the original thread" and provide the link to your old thread.

A moderator will merge the two threads, the new post is appended, and then the thread is "current again" and remains open... for 700 days if no new posts are made.

I think it will be good for the forum, as it will encourage newbies to start new threads and they will get attention to their own problems.

old threads are usually jumbled up with a lot of 'off topic' views.
not always, but we know it happens.

and a newbie deserves to have attention centered on their problem.
