Hi guys,

Yes, we had a major hardware failure at about 11 pm on Saturday night. I had been planning for some time to move the site off that server, where it has been living for the past 5 1/2 years, so it's a bit old in computer terms. We lose hard drives all the time, as they wear out, but we have redundant drives so that's not a problem. But this time it was the server motherboard itself that failed - and the facility where it's located did not have any more replacements for this older server, so we were left dead in the water.

I moved my mail server off of a physical server earlier this year and onto a cloud server at a different facility, and this went quite well. So I had been planning to do this for the web server as well - but when I normally do it, it is over the course of weeks, where I have time to build the new server, secure it, do the massive amount of configuration, site migration, testing, fixing...and then eventually cut over the site to the new server. I also have the benefit of having the old server running, so a lot of the configuration I can copy from the old server. This time I had hours to do it instead of weeks, with no running server to copy configuration from, so I had to do everything from scratch and from memory.

So the site is up and running, but there were some headaches along the way - the version of the forum software was incompatible with the newer operating system, so I had to upgrade the forum software as well, which involves many hours of implementing and testing the various customizations. Not to mention fixing the various things on the site that work differently (or not at all!) with the new OS. Normally I would do all of this on a test server, and only when it was all tested and working would I push it out to the live server. This time I didn't have the time - I had to get it back up NOW, so I did it all (and am still doing it) on the live server. That's why you're still seeing the odd glitches here and there.

I've been working 20 hour days since Sunday getting the site back up and running. There are still some formatting issues, but I'm getting there. Functionally I think most everything is working correctly.

Some browsers are still caching old style sheets and images from the old site, which means the new site is rendering oddly, as was mentioned here. Clearing the cache on your browser (Windows, press CTRL-F5 when on the site, phones depend on what browser you're using - Google "clear browser cache") will fix this.

The good news is that now that it is on a cloud server, I no longer have any hardware to worry about failing, and the site is much faster. I can also "adjust" the virtual hardware it runs on, so if the site slows down from more load, I can just add more CPU's, or memory, or whatever, with a few mouse clicks.

Anyway, I appreciate everyone's patience. This isn't something I had planned, obviously, nor would I have chosen to go about it this way - but now that it's happened, at least we'll have a good, stable platform going forward.

You've done a good job considering you built it from scratch. We'll just live with the temporary glitches that will work out over time. I do not envy you in this position, rebuilding a server from scratch takes weeks to get it all right. From this point forward, consider 'complaints' as just actually observances of your progress. One advantage is that all of us can serve as Beta testers for the new site

Astounding job getting the site back on-line so quickly!! The day you went down was the same day I wanted to make my first post!

I have a bug report - I would give it to you on your home site but I have no access.....

I tried logging in, but couldn't remember my password. Can't receive password reset e-mail because the addr I registered with in 2010 (work e-mail) had a domain change in 2014 and my registered e-mail address is now no good.

Since I had never posted, I figured it would be easier to just re-enroll as a new user. So I did that 4 days ago, but still haven't received Activation e-mail.

I tried messaging you using the "Contact Us" feature on the website, but that doesn't work either, returns the following error:

[phpBB Debug] PHP Warning: in file [ROOT]/phpbb/message/admin_form.php on line 122: require(../vendor/google/recaptcha/src/autoload.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory

The site shows me registered as DenverWinger, but i still can't log in since the account is not activated.

.... So here's another bug to squash! I'm sure there's a thousand others.... Keep up the excellent work!
