Comfort adjustments

Hi folks

Was out for a longish ride on my new to me gl1200 interstate and wondered if it would be safe to add ai little height to the seat. I find I get tired on the right side because my leg is a little cramped to reach the rear brake. I can't adjust the brake much lower because of the foot board and still feel I need another 3 inches between the boards and the seat.. the machine may have to break in the meat in this case but I remember the previous owner had told me he took out foam from the seat to lower it about that much. Not sure how he did it or if I can put it back.

But I'm starting to get used to the running boards which is good I guess it looks like everyone has them on most of the same bikes I've seen.

a good OEM seat to replace the one you have should be available at a decent price.

or there are plenty of aftermarket seats galore.

You may search Ebay for a oem seat or get a new cover, I used a new cover and used non memory foam. very comfortable.

Years back there was a man, Papa Jack, he used to go to a lot of rallies, he would take the foam from the seat and cut it down. A lot cheaper than buying a new seat, many of the seat vendors didn't like him very much. Maybe that is what happened to the foam in the seat on your bike. He did it to my 1200 wing and it was a big improvement

I replaced my seat with a good used seat, and it's good for about 200 miles but the foam just seems to pack down and it gets uncomfortable. If you think about it the foam is at least 25 years old. I think I'm going to have mine rebuilt with new foam and have the back of my seat moved back 1". More padding added to the front so it's more of a saddle shape. I talked to a shop a while back and they said $300. to recover it. I just want it to match the back rest also.

That's what's the PO says he did . To look at ot you couldn't tell the seat was changed at all but 27" height now.. not 30.

I'm thinking the same thing you are. I'd like it to be 3" higher and 3" further back. I'm so .... compressed I cant tilt my foot back far enough for the shifter and brake. At least not comfortably anyway. Wifey just picked up a shadow Aero for herself. That's got the same height as mine does now but the controls are further forward and I wouldn't have an issue with it that way.
