Sounds much like my 85 Virago, built in late 84 as an 85 model and without ever being titled or registered I nearly sought it's title as an 84. Fortunately research showed there was no 84 Virago 700 and I made the right call after deciphering the VIN number. DMV would have easily let me title it as an 84. A data loss at DMV, a lost title, a new title could be created with an error easily; the important issue is there is a clean title in hand without lien. The mystery may never be solved but it still rides, that's what is important.

That's exactly right. Ever notice how the next year model cars always come out about September?

Want to get REAL confused? In the RV industry it can get frustrating. A chassis will have a VIN specifying the model year. It is sold to the RV builder as an Incomplete Vehicle, and the RV is built on top of it. It is quite common to have, for instance, a 2015 model year chassis under a 2016 model year RV. By law, the complete vehicle is sold as a 2016 model year, as designated by the RV manufacturer, but when it gets resold down the road a DMV clerk will look at the chassis VIN and title it as a 2015 model year. Your 2016 RV has now lost a full year of depreciation due to the mistake of the DMV clerk!

But it is a trailer, not the same thing as a motor home.

Dave,
the same thing holds true, the frame was built by a different company than the coach builder....

inside the trailer though, Warrior pasted a document on a cabinet door that contains all of the pertinent info, frame VIN and coach ID number, and stated the Model year.

that VIN is stamped into a piece of flat strap, and then they welded the flat strap to the frame.

But, that frame was not a motor vehicle like a motor home chassis & it is licensed & registered from that frame VIN.

My 88 1500 was the 116th off the assembly line. It has a build date of 11/87, but right on the VIN plate is says it is a 1988 model year. I think this is just a human error on the part of dealer or DMV when filling out the title paperwork. Or, how the owner is reading the title. As stated, he needs to look at the VIN plate.

OP, you are right, that bike is a mess!
