1987 gl 1500???

This guy insists that he has a 87 GL 1500 Gold wing. I told him they didn't come out until 88, he said he has the title to prove it. I sent the the Gold Wing History from this site, also a video of the different year Gold Wing with pictures of each model and year. He still insists he has an 87 1500. You can see in the ad the bike is a mess and missing a lot of stuff, I don't think it will ever sell and if it does the buyer will play heck trying to register it. In Calif on the title there is a place for YEAR FIRST SOLD, I think that is maybe what he is looking at, since the 88 Wing came out the end of 87.

Could very well be he's got a lot title bike and the VIN sticker on showing manufacture date. I have a Yamaha Virago 700 V-twin that is an 85 but shows manufacture date on the VIN sticker of September 84. What a pain trying to work my titling issue with it being a barn find with 2.4 miles on it! He honestly may not know the model was manufactured before the model year was actually sold on the market. It could be a pain to title and insure like mine.

In California, way back when, a motorcycle was given the year model of the year it was first sold, regardless of manufacture date. That may have been nation-wide, don't know, but I think that was changed long before '88 though.

Why ain't we ridin'?

A friend of mine bought one of the first 1500 wings, it was late 1987 he took delivery but the title still said 88. I think any one buying that guys bike will have a hard time registering it/.

That's about the same as the 2007 Chevy Silverado. There were some 2006 that t had the same body as the 2006. Titles as 2007. chevy called them the 2007 Silverado Classic. Both body styles were released in 2007.
Sounds like the 1500 was an early production model that the dealer inadvertently titled as a 1987.

The only way to verify is to run the VIN number and see what the build date is.

I bought a new, 1987 Nissan Sentra in June 1986. That kind of advance year selling is fairly common in the auto industry.

If he has a title, what's the problem?

Just an opportunity to waste hyperspace. That's what we do here, right?

If the title is a fake it can be a big problem.

It is not uncommon for vehicles to have a title with a different year than the date of manufacture. Think of left over stock that does not get titled until sold. Sometimes several years pass. You guys are making a mountain out of a molehill.
