you make sure the gas compartment is totally free of wet gasoline laying in the area, it should be okay....
the connections need to be solid and tight so as to not create a "high joint" and create heat in that area.
If you have an inadvertent spill, make sure it is all dried up before you close that cover.
Keep in mind that it's the fumes that will ignite, not the liquid.
