I'd guess it is the pulse generators. Maybe the ECM.
When it dies, check for spark. To make sure you get to it in time, pull off the chrome plug covers before the ride and keep a spare plug in your pocket.
I can't remember which coil fires what plug but there's a pic somewhere that shows. I believe this is described wrong in the book, so...
