That is true only for the types which plug into the gear indicator on the gearbox, as the connector you need access to is buried deep in the bike.

The Gipro one does not connect there. This means, like the Accumate one I originally had, that it installs easily but the gear indication is only correct when the engine is running and the clutch is released (i.e. when moving) - because it works it out by comparing RPM and road speed. So you can't rely on it when pulled up at lights, for example.
