1800 fork boots

Monroe SA1997 can be had for about $6 each. Had this idea a long time ago but just now got a roundtuit :smile2:. The top (small opening) loos too small but it will stretch over the fork tube. I cut 3 bellows off the bottom, slid them on and zip tied them below the large part of the top of the slider. I punctured them just at the top of the slider to relieve air pressure and to be able to tell if a fork seal starts leaking.

fork boots

Those look good. But I would maybe make the hole you made large enough to let condensation drain also. I have seen lots of rusted fork tubes because of sealed fork boots.

Just a thought.

Took a ride Sunday, made a stop and looked at them, they were sucked in, had a vacuum in them, so I had to make some slits higher up to let air back in. Don't ever go anywhere without a knife.

I just bought a 1500 fork protector on eBay, carved it a little, painted it black, and zip-tied it to the Kury fork brace I run. So far so good, but I only have 110k miles on her so far.

I am pretty sure these are the covers i bought years ago. Actually for a persons legs.
A friend had them on his and said they worked great. He was having to replace his fork seals often and then didn't have to with these on.
I had to cut the 7" height down to 4-7/8". Also cut the diameter in half so they fit better but not snug.

Should be able to sew some velcro on the remaining piece to make another set.

I installed 4/4/19 and now have 17500 miles on them. Never had to clean the bugs or anything off anymore.
I did that religiously so the bug guts didn't eat the seals up or gum them up enough that i had to use a Seal Mate to clean the junk out..

EDIT: can easily be removed and cleaned if necessary.

That's a good idea, easy to R&R. I have 30,000 miles since I put the boots on and no leaks yet but 30k is about their normal life.

I have 45600 miles on my '12 and seals have never been replaced yet. Fork tubes look great.
Hoping bushings aren't worn out and wearing lower legs. Bushing wear is so unpredictable from posts i have read. I will just have to deal with it when the time comes.

I installed steering bearings at 15k miles and forks were out and i thought for sure they didn't need anything done then.
Hindsight--- should have put Progressive springs in then even if it was just from the top.

Installed Progressive front springs at 25k miles and slid them in from top. Sucked a little fork oil out and i believe it was still a nice red color which i think was hard to believe at that mileage.
I probably coulda woulda and shoulda redone the bushings and seals then, but got lazy since the fork oil looked good and just wanted to ride the rest of that year.

Years later and i am still riding until i say i shoulda done that a while back. LOL

I really do believe in preventive maintenance but i just get tired of working on stuff sometimes.

Clutch and brake fluid, front pads and pin lube is on the list as soon as i feel like it.
Oil change before trip in June.
BT46 is going on the front soon.

Hoping it makes it to Custer and back in June without any problems. See you all there.
