Hi everyone, I am the proud owner of a 1986 Goldwing 1200 GL Interstate with 77730 kms on it. Bought it about a month ago and can't wait to begin riding within the next month or so. We still have snow on the ground in places and its still a bit too cold for riding. In the meantime, I am doing maintenance on the bike in preparation for the riding season. I have joined this forum because of the valuable information, tips and help I'll be able to get from all the experienced Goldwing owners out there plus be part of a motorcycle community.

I do have a question for someone out there who may have ideas about a couple of issues I encountered today while working on my bike. First, I took off the final drive gear case, pulled out the drive shaft from the u joint. I put Moly 60 on both splines and put the whole thing back together. I don't have the rear wheel put back on yet. I started the bike and ran her through the gears. When I put it in the fifth gear there was kind of a clunking noise coming from the u joint area it seemed to me. I put it back in 4th gear and noise stopped. No noise in other gears either. Any ideas out there what may be happening. when I revved it up the noise disappeared.

The other issue is that when I checked the final drive gear oil after changing it earlier, it was grey...the Moly 60 has apparently gotten into the gear case and mixed with the gear oil. Is this normal; is it ok to leave it that way? Should I have put Moly on that spline because there was nothing on it when I first took it out.

Looking forward to any help/information I can get on these issues. Thanks. Newfierider

:welc:

There are two holes in the case to allow gear oil to get to those rear drive shaft splines. That's why there is a seal on the shaft there.

The moly probably won't hurt anything unless it plugs those holes. To be safe, you could change the oil again. I probably would.

Don't know for sure about the clunk but it's probably nothing.

Welcome To the Forum!

Been to Newfoundland. Back in '74 Dad wanted to go see L'anse (Northenmost tip of the island), An historic landing point and village of the Vikings. He was a High School history teacher. Pretty rocky and desolate up there. But the drive there passed thru some beautiful country. We spent a couple nights in Corner Brook. While waiting for the ferry back to the mainland we took the coastal road east from Port aux Basques as far as it would go. Would have liked to have seen St Johns, but we didn't go that way....

Small world eh. I was in Colorado Springs for three weeks summer of 1982; had a beautiful vacation there. I lived on the Northern Peninsula back then and spent time in Lanse aux Meadows. I now love riding up that peninsula on bike...so beautiful riding by the ocean. When you come to NL again you will need to take the ferry to Argentia, drive to St. Johns (has the claim for being the oldest city in North America) and definitely go to Cape Spear which is the most easterly point of land in NA. You could then drive west and go to the Bonavista Peninsula and eventually end up in Port aux Basques to take the ferry back to Nova Scotia.

Hello and Welcome to the forum family. Watch out for those guys at "Last Stop Garage" your bike might end up with knobbies or chains so you can ride in the winter ;) . LOL I like the show , they do some crazy builds. I hope your weather soon allows you to ride .
