I did it to my 1990 1500 and it works great but you need to change the windscreen gasket seal cause the 1998 is different and the adjustable windshield will not stay up

I used the line on the axle on left side to line with edge of fork, tightened clamp bolts then tightened axle bolt. bounced it up and down then tightened right side clamp bolts and noise was gone.

That makes sense. I had the forks off and rebuilt them. Had the noise before but it seems to be getting worse. I left the pinch bolts loose on the bottom held the front brakes and gave it some good...
